As buildings grow taller and feature more complex designs, traditional prescriptive building codes cannot keep up. Moreover, codes vary tremendously across borders, and no international best practice standard exists. As a result, performance based seismic design (PBSD) has emerged as an essential tool for designing and approving tall buildings, particularly in regions of high seismicity.

In light of this, the Council will convene a workshop on Sunday October 29 to discuss the latest advances in performance based seismic design, led by the CTBUH PBSD Working Group. The workshop will include a presentation and review of the new CTBUH Technical Guide entitled “Performance Based Seismic Design of Tall Buildings,” which details the process of PBSD, offering resources and real-world design examples. Other guidelines such as PEER TBI and LATBSDC will be reviewed and discussed.

Workshop attendees are encouraged to prepare case study presentations to share with the group. These presentations will form the basis of a detailed discussion of the technical challenges associated with PBSD. Following the discussion, a report on best practices from around the world will be generated, forming the primary output of the day’s workshop.
