Situated on the southern bank of the Yarra River, directly opposite Melbourne’s central business district, Southbank has become the skyscraper hub of the rapidly growing city. This walk covered the history of Southbank as it has evolved from a low-rise precinct of wharves and factories into what is now the densest suburb in the city, and visited some of the key projects that have enabled this transformation. Already home to the tallest building in the city, it will in coming years be home to two new supertall towers, one of which is currently under construction. Southbank is experiencing exponential population growth along with the rest of Melbourne, and with this growth has come a need for innovative projects to improve and increase public space and amenity for its residents. The above buildings and urban enhancements were prominently featured in this walking tour.
