Barangaroo South in Sydney was, until recently, a large container port in Central Sydney. The first phase of which has now been transformed into a vibrant, mixed use carbon zero waterfront district. As one of the Clinton C40 Climate Positive cities it will be carbon neutral, water positive, and generate zero waste in operation.
Barangaroo South has challenged and contributed to the debate and re-evaluation of the city’s planning rules, particularly in regard to height and proximity to water.
This presentation examined the masterplan, its urban and political imperatives and the key role Barangaroo South has played in delivering a new public realm, a new quarter and help in kick-starting a renewal of the City of Sydney’s ageing commercial space.
The urban structure of the new quarter is a game changer for high density development, focused on people rather than cars, it has redefined the traditional relationship of large scale commercial space to the public realm.
Key elements of the scheme include a mixed-use quarter that extends the vitality of Sydney to its waterfront; a common underground services facility; a network of pedestrian streets; direct connection to the main station; ferry wharves; major waterfront public spaces and a balanced mix of shops and restaurants. The office buildings advance communal workplace, health and wellbeing concepts in a high density, vibrant, city environment.
These factors have helped attract major tenants in a very short space of time, releasing many older CBD buildings for renewal, potentially adding future economic value to Sydney.
