Doing More with Less: Integration, Identity and Innovation in Tall Buildings

Philip Rowe
Director
Cox Architecture, Sydney

This session examined the role of design in the current city economy, and questioned how tall buildings can respond and contribute to the way people want to live. International benchmarks and examples showed how vertical villages can engage with their cities and communities, providing important public functions as gathering places, destinations and centers of amenity. Using the case study of Sapphire by the Gardens, a proposed twin-tower project in Melbourne featuring an interconnecting skybridge, the presentation demonstrated how innovative engineering and design solutions can result in “doing more with less.” Meanwhile, thoughtful integration with the site and city created an identity for a building and contributed to the identity of the community as well.
