Circular Quay Tower will be the centerpiece of an urban regeneration precinct that will reshape Sydney’s iconic harbour area and central business district. Taking advantage of its topography and unique location near Sydney Harbour, the tower will be an exciting new addition to Sydney’s iconic skyline, also contributing to its status as a global city. Key to the project is the successful integration of the tower with the public realm and the creation of a new public plaza and a series of laneways that criss-cross the site.
Showcasing how the design envelope defined by the competition became a key driver of the architectural expression of the scheme, Gerard Evenden’s presentation focused on how Sydney’s newest landmark is the latest in a long lineage of innovative office towers by Foster + Partners. Looking at previous exemplars of sustainability, the presentation drew connections through the practice’s history, as well as showcasing Foster + Partners’ approach to urban placemaking, which is at the heart of the designs for Circular Quay Tower. The presentation also outlined the development of the design through the competition process, including the genesis of the innovative offset core and external bracing, which allows flexible, open plan floorplates.
