Harry Seidler and Associates, Sydney
This presentation examined five significant tall buildings designed by Australia's great modernist architect, Harry Seidler (1923 - 2006). The five towers – Australia Square, the MLC Centre, Grosvenor Place, 9 Castlereagh Street, and Cove Apartments – are all located within the Sydney CBD and were constructed between the 1960s and the early 2000s. The presentation examined Seidler's consistent design approach to the geometry, forms, and composition of commercial and residential tower architecture. When considered in detail, these towers show the architect's design response to changing construction technology, environmental considerations, decreasing site areas, increasing city density, and changing market expectations. A walking tour explores the principal spaces of these tall buildings, including the public spaces and entrance lobbies, typical floor-plates and core configurations, and the façade and interior details.
